we had some new snow for about a minute there…i quickly grabbed my camera and off to Mayfair Farm I went. I just love the sheep…they are probably my favorite farm animal, but then again, it’s pretty hard to choose when all of them are spectacular!

I am thrilled to continue my photographic series, Locally Known: A Photographic Celebration of Our Local Farms. My column, and the Locally Known idea, grew from my own artistic desire to create a visual documentary of our local farmers, their farms, and to make a deeper connection with our bounty of fresh local food. My hope is that you will start a new relationship with the food you choose for your dinner plate, to know where it comes from and to connect with the people who provide it. I believe it strengthens our community when we have a connection with the hard-working people that provide us with fresh, natural and local food. Then, the next time you purchase locally raised grass-fed beef or a locally-grown organic vegetable (or two!), you will know exactly where it came from and who made it. Come with me on my journey through our local farms ~ let’s make the choice to support the people who are genuinely taking care of our land and our dinner tables. Hand Drawn Farm oh how i love jan & ian from Hand Drawn Farm in Hancock! One, they always greet you with a sunny smile, Two, they grow the most delicious & fabulous variety of vegetables, and Three, i always laugh a lot when i am with them. All three are huge points in my book. i was more than happy to visit jan & ian a few times late last summer & early fall to capture all of the goodness in their fields & CSA pickup. jan & ian are passionate about growing the best local produce for you to serve on your dinner table. with long days and lots of hard work, they offer an incredible CSA to us lucky folks here in the monadnock region. and, instead of the usual CSA box prepared ahead of time, they offer a CSA in the model more like a farmer’s market, where, on pickup days, you browse all of the produce offerings for the week and you take what you will eat. it’s very flexible and cuts down on waste…as they say, ‘take what you like and leave what you don’t.’ also, they have a fabulous pick your own garden, which includes a wide variety gorgeous flowers to put on said dinner table with those fantastic vegetables. and, have i mentioned how much i just love them??
I am really honored to be a part of the Biennial Jurors Choice Exhibit at the Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery in Keene. My photograph, The Blue Bed, was accepted, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. This photograph is one of my favorites, and it very dear to me as it was taken in a gorgeous old farmhouse that is (sadly) destined to be torn down. The Show Opening is tomorrow night, Thursday, January 24, from 5:30 – 7:30, at the Gallery. I am sure you will recognize a number of fabulous local artists in the exhibit as well…I hope you can see the show while it’s up!
